Students who may be interested in or are pursuing studies in cyber security are encouraged to attend the 3rd Annual Texas Cyber Security Awareness Week (TexSAW) Student Workshop and Competition hosted by the Cyber Security Research and Education Institute at The University of Texas at Dallas. These events are designed to motivate students to specialize in the emerging and exciting technical field of cyber security.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet students interested in cyber security from other universities in Texas.

  • Attend workshops on Wednesday, October 30th to develop fundamental hands-on skills in cyber security including penetration testing, exploitation, and web application security.

  • Put these skills to use in a cyber security competition on Thursday, October 31st.

Student accommodation grants for up to two nights are available. Applicants must have a current GPA of at least 2.7 and be enrolled in a computer science (or related) program. Please send a copy of your current unofficial transcript and a personal statement on the expected benefits of attending these events to Dr. Kamil Sarac at [email protected] by October 16th.

Student Hardware/Software Requirements:

We will have teams of two to compete during the CTF event on Thursday. Each team should have a minimum of one laptop computer with WiFi interface to connect to the wireless network at UTD. Having two computers per team would be more useful - one to be used for the competition and the other to do their google searches while working on the problems.

For Web Security discussion, students should have Firefox installed and should also download Live HTTP Headers: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/live-http-headers/

For Penetration Testing discussion and for the CTF competitions, students should have a VM image of Kali linux http://www.kali.org/ and VMware player installed on their computers.
