Former UT Dallas centerfielder Chase Brown has been named the winner of the inaugural 2012 Carroll Beringer Metroplex Divisional Player of the Year award.

The business administration student received the award from the DFW Hall-Ruggles Chapter for the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) during a halftime ceremony Monday in the Comets men’s basketball game against the University of the Ozarks.

Brown was accompanied by UT Dallas head baseball Coach Shane Shewmake at the ceremony.

Brown, a native of Arlington, wrapped up his Comet career last spring by earning first team All-America honors for the program, becoming the third-ever Comet to collect All-America recognition and the first UT Dallas baseball player to be named first-team. Brown helped lead the Comets to their second-ever American Southwest Conference East Division title.

In his final season, he ranked among the top Division III hitters nationally with a .413 batting average and squad-most 66 hits, eight home runs, four triples, 42 RBIs, and a .510 on-base average. He was a consensus pick for the 2012 All-Conference team and also sported a .989 fielding percentage with a single error in 92 chances.

Chase’s award is named for Fort Worth Cats standout and longtime SABR member Beringer, who pitched in professional baseball for 14 years, was 1959 Texas League Player of the Year at Fort Worth and served as pitching coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1961-72) and Philadelphia Phillies (1973-78).

SABR is a 42-year old organization of baseball writers, broadcasters, officials, fans and former players dedicated to the sport.
