Martineau Professorship Goes to Callier Director
Endowed Position Named for Center's Former Foundation Board President

Dr. Thomas Campbell, executive director of the UT Dallas Callier Center for Communication Disorders, has been named first holder of the Sara T. Martineau Professorship in Communication Disorders.

David Martineau established the endowed professorship in honor of his wife, Sara, a longtime supporter of UT Dallas and a past president of the Callier Center foundation board.

“Sara Martineau and her husband, David, have been wonderful supporters of the Callier Center over the years,” said Campbell, who also is a professor in the UT Dallas School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. “I am honored to be the first recipient of the Martineau Professorship.”

An expert in the field of neurologic communication disorders, Campbell has focused his research on understanding the environmental, physiological and behavioral markers that underline speech and language disorders in children. In recent years, he has studied both the genetic and physiological processes that are associated with childhood motor speech disorders. He holds a PhD in communicative disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mrs. Martineau first became involved with UT Dallas after serving in 1993 as the chair for the Crystal Charity Ball, one of the most successful volunteer organizations providing large charitable grants in Dallas. That year, the ball awarded a grant of more than $650,000 to the Callier Center.

After learning more about the Callier Center’s work, Mrs. Martineau joined its foundation board and served as board president from 2006 to 2008. Under her leadership, the Callier board created more distinct roles and responsibilities for the vice presidents and implemented a policy to involve all members in committee work.

In February, Mrs. Martineau was awarded the Gifford K. Johnson Community Leadership Award – named for the former president of the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies, the institution that Johnson helped mold into UT Dallas in 1969. The award is bestowed on non-alumni who are passionate supporters and advocates for UT Dallas.

Mrs. Martineau serves as a life member of the UT Dallas Development Board and is an emeritus trustee of the Callier board. She also serves in leadership roles for many other educational, arts and civic organizations.
