UT Dallas Hosts Research Students from Mexico

Eleven undergraduates are conducting research this summer at UT Dallas as part of an effort to stimulate interest in science and engineering research among students at Mexican universities.

The UT Dallas Summer Research Program is designed to equip the visiting students with the skills and knowledge to pursue careers in their chosen fields.

Participants conduct research projects under the supervision of research mentors in one of the active research environments on campus.  They conduct their own data analyses and present their findings at a formal scientific session at the program’s conclusion.

The program has been in existence for eight years. The willingness of the research mentors to accept the participants into their research programs is a key element of its success.

The program is organized by the Office of Graduate Studies and the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies with the support of the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program.

“An active research experience of this type is considered one of the most effective ways of attracting talented undergraduates and retaining them in careers in science and engineering,” said Dr. Austin Cunningham, the program’s director.

The program runs eight to nine weeks. Housing is provided on campus. Since 2002, 73 undergraduate students have taken part in this program, conducting research in biology, nanotechnology, computer science, chemistry, engineering, the natural sciences, management and related fields.

Students are scheduled to present their research results on July 29.

The UT Dallas faculty mentors are: A. Dean Sherry, Warren Goux, and Gregg Dieckmann (all in chemistry); Thomas Linehan (arts and  technology); Santosh D’Mello (biology); Fatemeh Hassanipour (mechanical engineering); Anvar Zakhidov (nanotechnology); Bruce Gnade and Manuel Quevedo (material sciences); and Thomas Lambert (English and cultural program).

Students from Mexico live and conduct research on campus as part of the summer research program.
