UT Dallas faculty members have helped organize a six-day conference that will bring together 2,000 leading digital technology experts to discuss advancements in signal processing.

The IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing will include presentations on speech processing and recognition; image and video processing; multimedia and multidimensional signal processing; sensor arrays; bio-imaging; and electroacoustics.

ICASSP is the world’s largest and most comprehensive technical conference of its kind. UT Dallas faculty are handling four of the top spots on the organizing committee for the conference, which gets under way Sunday, March 14, at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel.

“The conference will include world-class speakers, tutorials and exhibits with 153 lecture and poster sessions of almost 1,500 peer-reviewed papers,” said Dr. John H.L. Hansen, technical program chair for the conference and head of electrical engineering at UT Dallas, where he also holds the University Distinguished Chair in Telecommunications Engineering.

The other faculty members helping plan the conference are Issa Panahi, associate professor of electrical engineering; Philip Loizou, professor of electrical engineering; and Nasser Kehtarnavaz, professor of electrical engineering.

One of the most popular portions of the annual conference is its Show and Tell event, which includes interactive demonstrations of some of the latest innovations by research and engineering groups in industry, academia and government. The demonstrations will run Tuesday through Thursday and feature technology from such areas as machine learning, multimedia systems, sensor arrays and speech processing.

The conference will also feature four plenary talks, including an overview of advances in neural engineering (covering developments such as neural prostheses, nano neuro-implants, neuro-robotics and brain-computer interfaces) and a look at recent advances in radar imaging of building interiors, an area of particular interest for fire and rescue operations.
