Dr. Kathryn Stecke is an Ashbel Smith Professor in operations management.
Naveen Jindal School of Management professor Kathryn Stecke has been recognized as a scholar who has contributed significantly to the advancement of women in the field of operations research and the management sciences (OR/MS).
Dr. Stecke, Ashbel Smith Professor of Operations Management at the Jindal School, received the 2013 Women in Operations Research and Management Sciences (WORMS) Award for the Advancement of Women in OR/MS from the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, (INFORMS). The WORMS Award recognizes a professor each year who has helped promote the professional development and recognition of women in the OR/MS field within their own institutions and professional organizations.

“Dr. Stecke has been instrumental in inspiring and leading women students and younger faculty members throughout her career. She is a strong role model for women in the field and professional organizations,” said Dr. Susan Albin, Rutgers University industrial and systems engineering professor. The former INFORMS president presented the award to Stecke at the INFORMS conference Oct. 8 in Minneapolis.
“It was a big surprise to me to win this award. I didn’t even know I had been nominated. But it’s a huge honor to be recognized by an organization that has played such a big role in my professional life,” Stecke said.
Stecke, who joined UT Dallas in 2002, is an internationally recognized scholar in flexible manufacturing and supply chain issues. She speaks globally about issues related to supply chain management, operations and marketing interface issues, flexible manufacturing systems and seru, which is a Japanese organizational and production system that focuses on electronics product assembly.
Since her days as a graduate student, Stecke has been an active member of INFORMS, the largest professional society worldwide for professionals in the field of operations research and the management sciences. She has chaired international and national meetings for INFORMS and has served two terms on the organization’s board of directors. She was elected an INFORMS fellow in 2009.
