The $5-million, 23,500-square-foot facility, expected to open in the fall of 2003, will offer services to residents of North Dallas and Collin County with speech, language or hearing problems.

“The expansion of the Callier Center’s presence beyond its current location near downtown Dallas will help us extend outreach activities offered to our many publics, foster cooperative efforts with other UTD schools and forge collaborative ties with the hundreds of high-technology firms in close proximity to the new location,” said Dr. Bert S. Moore, dean of UTD’s School of Human Development, of which Callier is a part.

“The establishment of this satellite facility will permit Callier to meet the growing demand for its renowned clinical, educational and research programs from patients, students and the community at large,” said Dr. Ross J. Roeser, director of the Callier Center and professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the School of Human Development.

Established in 1962, the Callier Center is nationally recognized for advances in the treatment and prevention of hearing, speech and language disorders that affect individuals of all ages, from infants to seniors. The center is located on Inwood Road in Dallas, adjacent to such major medical facilities as The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, St. Paul Hospital and Parkland Hospital. The center educates future clinicians and researchers, offers state-of-the-art clinical and educational services and conducts innovative research.

Construction on the new building is expected to begin in early June. UTD has launched a fundraising drive to raise $1.5 million to outfit the building with a variety of diagnostic and other types of equipment.

The satellite facility will house clinical programs, where patients with hearing, speech and language disorders will be diagnosed and treated, as well as classrooms and laboratories for student training and research.

The one-story building will be topped by a dome-like structure over its entrance. It will be located south of Synergy Park Boulevard and west of Floyd Road, at the northern boundary of UTD’s campus.
