UT Dallas to Host Symposium on STEM Education Issues

The Texas Tribune, in partnership with The University of Texas at Dallas, will present a daylong event focusing on major issues in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in Texas.

On the Road: A One-Day Symposium on STEM Education” will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Clark Center (CN 1.112) on the UT Dallas campus. The event will feature panel discussions on several topics, including teacher training, workforce development, changes to the state’s curriculum and graduation requirements, and innovations in classroom technology.

As part of the symposium, UT Dallas President David E. Daniel will take the stage for a conversation with Texas Tribune CEO and editor-in-chief Evan Smith.

Participants in the panel discussions will include state elected officials, high school and university faculty, and education specialists from industry. Representatives from the Texas Workforce Commission, the Texas Education Agency, Teach for America and the Education Service Center, Region 20, also will take part.

Dr. Mary Urquhart, head of the Department of Science and Mathematics Education at UT Dallas and co-director of UTeach Dallas, will be one of the panelists during a session on teacher training, preparation and recruitment. UTeach is devoted to educating and retaining the next generation of highly qualified secondary science and math teachers.
