U.T. Dallas to Host Six Lecturers from Dijon, France
UTD Faculty Members to Visit French University Under Scholars Exchange

A loaf of bread, a jug of wine…and UTD.

The University of Texas at Dallas will take on a decidedly French flavor this academic year as it hosts a series of six lectures by university faculty from Dijon, France. The visits by the French professors are part of a unique scholarly exchange that will see six members of the UTD faculty make presentations in Dijon during 2001-2002.

“This exciting development is an outgrowth of a long-term affiliation between UTD and l’Universitéde Bourgogne à Dijon and builds on the official ‘sister cities’ relationship which exists between the cities of Dallas and Dijon,” said Dr. Bert S. Moore, dean of the School of Human Development at UTD. “We are delighted that this collaboration will enable members of the university and the Dallas community both to meet a renowned group of international scholars and to broaden their understanding of a range of lively topics.”

“We are pleased to support this exchange between the two universities,” said Hugues Genot, general manager of Cretin Orfevre Corporation of Dijon, which has provided support for the exchange of scholars. “In a global economy, collaborations across national boundaries are critical not only to international understanding, but also economic advancement.”

Other sponsors include the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas and the Hotel de la Cloche and Perignon Joailler in Dijon.

The first lecture at UTD will feature Dr. André Holley, director of the European Chemical Science Institute in Dijon, whose topic will be “World of Smell and Taste.” An internationally renowned scholar of sensory physiology, Holley has written extensively on how the senses respond to food, wine and other sensory stimuli.

Dr. Holley’s presentation will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27 in the UTD conference center. As with all lectures in the series, the public is invited to attend free of charge.

The following additional lectures are planned, with times and dates to be determined:

  • “What Makes a Wine and a Wine Taster,” Dr. Dominique Valentin, a graduate of UTD and associate professor at the European Chemical Science Institute.
  • “The First Year of Life,” Dr. Annie Vinter, professor of psychology, l’Université de Bourgogne à Dijon.
  • “The Importance of Smell in Mother-Infant Relations,” Dr. Benoit Schaal, professor at the European Chemical Science Institute.
  • “Experts’ and Novices’ Perception of Music,” Dr. Emmanuel Bigand, professor of psychology, l’Université de Bourgogne à Dijon.

UTD faculty members who will visit Dijon include a professor from the School of Arts and Humanities, Dr. Robert Rodriguez, and five professors from the School of Human Development – Drs. Hervé Abdi, James Bartlett, Walter Dowling, Alice O’Toole and Emily Tobey.
