The University community is invited to join with others across the country Monday in observing a moment of silence as an expression of support for Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and other victims of a shooting Saturday in Tucson that killed six and injured 14.

“It seems important to express our gratitude to the public-spirited men and women who serve as our elected officials, in our judiciary and as government staff members,” said Dr. David E. Daniel, president of The University of Texas at Dallas.

“It is also important to remember and revere the citizens who cared enough to come out and meet personally with their representative. What seemed like an ordinary act of ordinary citizens reminds us how extraordinary our country’s rights and values remain, even when momentarily subverted in such a tragic way.”

University flags will fly at half-staff until Friday, following guidelines issued by the White House late Sunday.
