UT Dallas held a Juneteenth celebration, presented by the Multicultural Center and co-sponsored by many other University departments. Participants enjoyed a complimentary barbecue lunch, as well as music from “Beauty and the Beats,” which played favorites from Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Erykah Badu and more.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers brought news to Texas that slaves were free, two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
