Comet Spirit Will Be in the Air for 25th Annual Homecoming Celebration

Alumna Cornelia McCowan, who graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, enjoyed Homefest festivities during homecoming last year with her son and daughter.

Students will have the chance to show off their Comet spirit during Homecoming 2018 activities Nov. 6-10 at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Highlights of the 25th annual event will include the Homecoming Parade with custom-designed golf carts, cars and pickups; live music; a cardboard boat regatta; a glow-in-the-dark 5K run; and a men’s basketball game.

“We’re excited to bring the 25th annual homecoming event, reuniting past and present Comets and making sure we have plenty of fun activities for everyone,” said Tineil Lewis, assistant director of the Student Organization Center.

The Homecoming Street Team will provide a sneak peek into this year’s event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, on the mall outside the Student Union with prizes, giveaways, the Pop-Up Farmers Market and music by Radio UTD.

Homecoming officially will begin with a kickoff party from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the mall and will feature music, food, games and prizes.

About 240 people have registered for the run on Wednesday evening, with participants sporting glow-in-the-dark gear.

Approximately 60 groups have registered for the Homecoming Parade, which will start at noon Friday, Nov. 9, along Rutford Avenue. The parade will feature custom-decorated golf carts, cars, pickups and trucks with trailers.

The cardboard boat regatta contest, which challenges participants to create racing vessels with cardboard and duct tape, will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the Activity Center pool.

Homefest — a concert, tailgate party and Comet Street — will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in Parking Lot J. Highlights will include food, music, caricature artists and a limited supply of free blankets, as well as a live concert featuring the rock and electropop band Arizona. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own tailgate fixings.

Homecoming attendees are encouraged to join the UT Dallas Cheerleaders and Power Dancers in supporting the men’s basketball team when it plays Hendrix College at 2 p.m. Nov. 10. At halftime, the homecoming king and queen will be announced.

For the University’s more than 106,000 alumni, homecoming offers the opportunity to see recent changes on campus and enjoy the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center, said Jill Arredondo, senior director of alumni and annual giving programming. This year’s alumni events include a booth at Homefest.

“Homecoming is the perfect opportunity for alumni to return to our beautiful campus and see everything that has changed in recent years,” Arredondo said. “It is a time to celebrate Comet pride, reconnect with friends and share memories with fellow alumni.”

Music, games, prizes and food can all be found at Homefest, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in Parking Lot J.
