Holiday Drives to Benefit Troops, Families in Need
Children’s Books, Drugstore Items and Canned Food Accepted Until Dec. 13

Operation Care Package is in full swing at the UT Dallas campus, with donations being accepted for the United Service Organization (USO) and The Salvation Army until Monday, Dec. 13.

The USO is collecting new children’s books in partnership with United Through Reading. The program allows deployed troops to read aloud while being recorded on DVD for their children – the DVD and book are then mailed to the child and family. The book collections have been spearheaded by the offices of Business Affairs and Student Affairs.

Toiletries and drug items also are being collected for USO care packages.

“Business Affairs and the University are extremely fortunate to have so many who care deeply and want to give back to the community, especially during the holidays,” said Dr. Calvin D. Jamison, senior vice president for Business Affairs. “What better ways than the care package and book drive for men and women who serve in the armed forces and to the Salvation Army, who serve so many in the local community.”

The Salvation Army is accepting canned food and gently used children’s books.

“We have collected more than 245 children’s books. This could not have been possible without the involvement of many from different spectrums across campus,” said Purvi Sampat from the Office of Business Affairs.

Donations for the USO and Salvation Army should be dropped off at Room 2.410 in the Administration Building, 2.208 in the Multipurpose Building or 3.600 in the Student Services Building.

In addition to children's books, the USO effort seeks the following drugstore items:

•Lip Balm•Travel Size Toothpaste•Travel Size Foot Powder•Travel Size    Toothbrushes •Travel Size    Shaving Cream•Travel Size Deodorant•Disposable Razor•Eye DropsThe USO requests that donation items be kept unbundled.
