Last spring, Luke Robson, who received a bachelor's degree in arts and technology, and his fellow graduates got ready before the start of their commencement ceremony. The School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication will hold its fall commencement ceremony Friday at 2 p.m.
Family, friends and supporters will help celebrate the accomplishments of the newest class of graduates from UT Dallas during commencement ceremonies Dec. 16-17 in the Activity Center.
More than 2,400 students are expected to earn their degrees this fall, including 1,221 bachelor’s students and 1,160 master’s students. Fifty doctoral candidates also have been certified. Approximately 2,600 students, including many graduates who earned their degrees over the summer, are expected to participate in the ceremonies.
After the degrees are officially conferred, UT Dallas will have awarded nearly 110,000 degrees since the University’s inception in 1969.
The recognition of the graduates begins Thursday with the doctoral hooding ceremony. During this event, faculty members and students are dressed in traditional academic regalia, with family members and friends in attendance. One by one, each student’s adviser places the doctoral hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her successful completion of the doctoral program.
The largest of UT Dallas’ eight schools, the Naveen Jindal School of Management, has the most candidates for fall graduation, 1,093.
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science has 499 candidates, followed by the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences with 262 and the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with 173. The School of Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication has 129; the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences with 120; the School of Interdisciplinary Studies with 89; and the School of Arts and Humanities with 66.
In keeping with UT Dallas tradition, students have been chosen as commencement speakers. In addition, UT Dallas President Richard Benson will make his first commencement remarks since becoming president, addressing the graduates, their families, friends and supporters.
After each ceremony, graduates and guests will recess to the mall for Memories on the Mall. The event celebrates the University’s newest alumni with light refreshments, photo opportunities and a special gift for graduates.
