Earth Week Activities Designed to Paint UT Dallas Green

Earth Week, UT Dallas

A free gardening workshop will be available at the UT Dallas community garden from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 23. Students must RSVP to participate.

UT Dallas student organizations and offices will focus on helping the campus get greener during Earth Week, April 21-25.

The week’s largest event, the Earth Fair on Tuesday, April 22, coincides with global Earth Day. The fair will feature about 20 informational and interactive booths sponsored by community agencies, campus departments and student organizations. The fair will include giveaways and music from noon to 2 p.m. on Chess Plaza.

“We hope to engage and encourage students to continue finding Earth-friendly solutions to help all of us become effective stewards of the environment,” said Monalisa Amidar, assistant director of the Office of Student Volunteerism (OSV). Her office organizes Earth Week events along with Student Government and Facilities Management’s Sustainability department.

A new highlight of Earth Week is an “E-Waste Roundup,” during which faculty, staff and students can bring from home any old electronic equipment and parts to recycle.

The roundup, sponsored by the UT Dallas chapter of the Materials Research Society, will accept items such as electric cords, cellphones, broken printers and video game consoles from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Clark Center parking lot. ForeRunner Recycling will remove the day’s collected items from campus.

The Coca-Cola Recycling Education Vehicle will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, with games and interactive displays about the benefits of recycling.

The annual Pedal for the Planet bike ride will begin outside the Activity Center at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24, and travel designated routes across campus. This event is B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bike) and will include pre-ride snacks and giveaways. Thursday evening concludes with a screening and discussion of the documentary Ocean Frontiers at 7 p.m. in the Davidson Auditorium.

Would-be gardeners can learn how to garden and compost during a hands-on seminar given by UT Dallas greenhouse manager Craig Lewis at the UT Dallas Community Garden from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 23. Seeds and gardening tools will be provided.

Earth Week will also provide off-campus service opportunities. Students can participate in the OSV Adopt-A-Highway volunteer event at 10 a.m. Monday, April 21, helping with trash cleanup on the Bush Turnpike access road between Coit and Waterview.

On Friday, April 25, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., a busload of UT Dallas volunteers will help with mulching, nursery work and cleanup at the Texas Tree Foundation’s tree farm in Richardson. Participants will attend an educational workshop and then rotate through each service project before returning for a lunch back on campus.
