Comets Get Creepy, Kooky and Creative for Halloween

Students were as colorful and as they were creative for Halloween 2011. Events of the night and the days leading up to it included “trunk-or-treating,” a pumpkin decorating contest and tours of three specially designed haunted houses.

All in all, Comets had spooky good times.

Festivities kicked off last week with a pumpkin decorating contest in the Dean of Students’ suite in the Student Services Building. Entries included pumpkins large and small made to look like a bowl of M&Ms, a pig, an owl and “Temoc-a-Pillar” caterpillar. Staff and students voted for their favorites, with prizes presented in such categories as “most spirited,” “most likely to date Temoc” and “I’d friend this one on Facebook.”

On Friday evening, various student organizations and campus departments decorated the trunks of their vehicles and handed out candy to visiting trick-or-treaters.  It was the eighth year for Trunk-or-Treat, a tradition in which students living on campus play host to children from the community.

On Monday evening, members of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega took their own spin on trick-or-treating when they went door-to-door in neighborhoods flanking the University in search of canned goods. Their drive benefited the North Texas Food Bank.

Finally, on Monday night, SUAAB (the Student Union & Activity Advisory Board) staged three separate, themed haunted houses.  Set up in the Galaxy Rooms of the Student Union, the maze-like rooms were created in partnership with the Neuroscience Students Association and the campus improv group Onomatopoeia.

“They started with a fictional character that was born into a cult of evil scientists,” said Jonathan “GNO” White, assistant director of student programs. “The scientists later experiment on the child, and the child morphs into a horrific creature.”

Each section of the haunted house traced the character’s life, from childhood to adulthood, he said.

“Halloween is always fun here, but it turned out to be a pretty thrilling evening,” White said. “The students get to experience the creations and hard work these groups put into setting up the haunted houses.”
