On Oct. 27, The University of Texas at Dallas celebrated the inauguration of its fifth president, Dr. Richard Benson. Later that evening, the city of Dallas marked the significant day by lighting Reunion Tower.

It was a fitting exclamation point for the landmark day that included the Presidential Inauguration held in the Edith O’Donnell Arts and Technology Building Lecture Hall. During the ceremony, Benson was granted the authority and symbols of his office by representatives from The University of Texas System, including UT System Chancellor William H. McRaven and UT System Regent Ernest Aliseda.
Reunion Tower opened in 1978 and that same year was featured in the opening credits of the hit television series “Dallas.” The tower stands 560 feet tall and is illuminated with 259 custom LED light fixtures inside its signature dome. Its nightly light shows are visible from 15 miles away, according to the World Federation of Great Towers.
