In the 2017 UT Dallas Top 100 Business School Research Rankings™, the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania remained as the top school in the world and North America for the 13th straight year.

The 2017 standings are based on articles published in 24 peer-reviewed journals in the five-year period of 2012 to 2016. Wharton published and collaborated on 305 articles in those journals during that period.

The Naveen Jindal School of Management at The University of Texas at Dallas, which created the annual rankings in 2005, cracked the top 10 for the first time this year, placing fifth in the world and North America.

“We developed the rankings as a mechanism for business schools to benchmark their research productivity,” said Dr. Hasan Pirkul, Jindal School dean and Caruth Chair of Management. “This year’s top-five milestone is a testament to the hard work our faculty has been doing.”

Harvard Business School came in at No. 2 for the sixth straight year in both rankings. NYU’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business moved up one place from No. 4 to No. 3. It has maintained a top-five position in the rankings in 12 out of 13 years. Rounding out the top five was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, which was No. 4 on both rankings.

Three schools outside of the United States cracked the top 25 in the worldwide rankings. INSEAD — which has campuses in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi — earned the No. 8 worldwide ranking with an output of 207 articles. The University of Toronto’s Joseph L. Rotman School of Management came in at No. 11 in North America and No. 12 worldwide by publishing 191 articles. The University of London’s London Business School was the only other business school outside the U.S. to crack the top 25 in the worldwide rankings.

Several schools were big gainers. The University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Business Administration moved up 12 spots from No. 98 to No. 86. North Carolina State University’s College of Management climbed 11 places from No. 99 to No. 88.

Three business schools moved up 10 positions: the University of Oregon’s Charles H. Lundquist College of Business, the University of Missouri at Columbia’s Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business and Florida International University’s College of Business.

In the worldwide rankings, two schools cracked the Top 100 for the first time: Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management (Beijing, China) and the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada).

Thirteen countries were represented in the rankings — Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Jindal School has maintained a record of published articles from the 24 journals used in the rankings since 1990. In addition to providing both rankings, it can be searched by school name, journal (or combination of journals), author, article or collaboration. Site visitors can conduct a per capita performance analysis of up to 10 business schools. A rankings overview page lists the journals and explains the methodology.
