Three universities made the Top 10 for the first time in the UT Dallas Top 100 Business School Research Rankings™ released this week by the Naveen Jindal School of Management.

The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania remained as the top school in the world as it has for more than a decade, according to the 2016 list, an index that tracks faculty research productivity at management schools. Most universities saw little change in their position with the exception of the University of Toronto, the University of North Carolina and INSEAD, which is based in France, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

The University of Toronto climbed to No. 7 from No. 17 in North America and to No. 8 from No. 18 worldwide. The University of North Carolina made a five-spot jump in both sets of rankings, arriving at No. 9 in North America and No. 10 in the global standings. INSEAD rose to No. 7 from No. 11 worldwide.

The Jindal School compiles the rankings from a database of faculty research published in 24 leading journals. The index scoring system measures single and multiple authors and their university affiliations. Separate North American and worldwide rankings are compiled. This year’s standings are based on articles published between 2011 and 2015.

Harvard University retained its hold on No. 2 among national and international schools for the fifth consecutive year.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranks third on both lists, a place it has held onto for two years. New York University, The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan held steady in their positions of No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, where they have been for two years.

Columbia University came in at No. 8 in North America and No. 9 in the world.

Newcomers in the rankings this year include Imperial College Business School, which ranked No. 97, Fudan University School of Management, coming in at No. 99 and the University of Kentucky, which ranked No. 100.

Jindal School faculty produced 198 articles during the most recent period, placing the school at No. 11 among North American business schools and No. 12 worldwide, unchanged from the last reporting period. Since 2005, the school has climbed from No. 36 in North America.

“The UT Dallas Top 100 is a useful tool for our fellow academicians and other business schools to benchmark their research progress. It documents output in a central location that’s accessible to everyone,” said Dr. Hasan Pirkul, Jindal dean and Caruth Chair of Management.

“A university’s prestige depends heavily on the front-line research and intellectual innovations that their faculties disseminate to the world. That the Jindal School’s faculty research ranks so highly speaks volumes about our faculty’s commitment to research,” Pirkul said.

The ranking database can be searched by journal, school, author or key phrases in articles from 1990 to present. Publications follow a range of disciplines, including accounting, finance, information systems, international business, marketing, operations and organizational behavior.
