Kelly Durbin and Friends Return for Jazz Performance, March 22

Jazz pianist Kelly Durbin will perform in concert with three of the best musicians in the Metroplex – acoustic bass player James Gilyard, saxophonist Karl Lampman and drummer Joel Fountain – Friday, March 22, at 8 p.m. in the Jonsson Performance Hall on the campus of The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD).

Tickets are $10 to the general public and free to anyone with a UTD photo identification card. They may be purchased Tuesdays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Art & Performance office in the Visual Arts Building at UTD or by telephone with a credit card.

Durbin, a UTD faculty member, directs the Jazz Ensemble at the university and teaches classes in music theory, MIDI, jazz history and jazz keyboard. Kelly holds a Master of Music degree from The University of North Texas and is a long-time member of the Marchel Ivery Quintet and the James Gilyard Ensemble. His professional credits include work with David ”Fathead” Newman, James Clay, Chuck Rainey, Billy Hart, Louis Hayes, Ed Soph, Lynn Seaton, Hank Crawford, Sebastian Whittaker and Roseanne Vitro.

Gilyard, who serves as the artistic director for the Sammons Jazz series at the Sammons Center for the Arts in Dallas, has performed with Kenny Burrell, James Clay, Red Garland, Barney Kessell, Billy Hart and Roseanne Vitro and has done three recordings of his own. His early music career included three years in the 97th United States Army Field Artillery Band. He also served as staff bassist for Benson Sound Studios in Oklahoma City during the early 1970’s and is a favorite rhythm section member in the bands of many Dallas area jazz notables. He

Fountain is a current member of the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band. He is featured on the band’s recent CD “Lab 2001.” With the One O’clock Band, and through the guest series program at UNT, he performs with many internationally acclaimed jazz artists including Michael and Randy Brecker, Terry Gibbs, Byron Stripling, Mike Stern, Fred Hirsch, Kenny Wheeler and Kenny Werner. In 1996, as a member of a trio, Fountain won the “Europe Jazz Contest,” and as a result toured throughout Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In 1999 he performed with the NJPT Quintet that received the Downbeat International Student Music Award for best jazz instrumental group.
