Simple Ways to Conserve Energy
During the dog days of August, Texans can only expect more high temperatures for weeks to come.
As the temperatures soar, so does electricity usage, putting a strain on the electric grid during the peak hours from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Gary Cocke, associate director for energy conservation and sustainability, recommends the following steps to conserve energy.
- Turn off lights when you leave a room and use natural light whenever possible.
- Unplug unused devices, and make sure computers and printers use power save settings.
- During peak energy use time, avoid running large appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer).
- Set your thermostat 2 to 3 degrees higher during peak hours. Using a fan can make you feel 4 to 6 degrees cooler.
“Especially with record heat this summer, North Texans can take steps that will not only help ease the strain on the area’s electric grid but also save homeowners money,” Cocke said.
