There is no separate application for the Fellowship. After admissions to the University’s research-intensive doctoral programs are made, academic units nominate highly-qualified students to the Fellowship selection committee for consideration.

Nominated students’ applications for doctoral study are reviewed comprehensively in the contexts of individual merit and of synergy with the interests of our leading researchers. From this pool, 30-45 are invited to campus for interview-recruitment-selection activities in March. Individuals with records that demonstrate mastery of the intellectual foundations of their field of study, intensive independent accomplishments in research, and the personal dynamism to emerge as leaders of innovative research programs are most likely to receive an invitation to the interview weekend.

Invited attendees have meals and local accommodation provided by the university, and travel expenses reimbursed up to a limit of $1,000. A critical component of the interview activities is engagement in the formal interviews and informal interactions with leading UT Dallas faculty and current students who participate in the process. Ideally, mutual interests emerge from these interactions that are crucial in selecting Fellows and in ensuring that the individuals we most want to become Fellows will accept our offers. Offers of Fellowships begin to be made in March.

Essential to the appointment of Fellows is synergy between the prospective doctoral student and the student’s prospective dissertation supervisor. A priority of the Program is that Fellows commence active research work concurrently with the first year of graduate coursework. This is best accomplished by individuals who have determined from the beginning their research field and the faculty leader with whom to do their dissertation. Interested students should investigate UT Dallas’ leading research areas and faculty, and cultivate relevant relationships well in advance of applying to the University.
